FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Accessible Transportation Rights Protest in Taiwan
Taipei, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 13th, Disability Rights United People's Action (DRUPA 萬障行動權益聯盟) is leading a protest in Taipei Train Station. The inaccessible railway, buses, and air transportation systems, have failed to provide accessibility to the public and often brought serious danger to commuters in Taiwan.
Wheelchair users are often carried by men on the train track in order to access the platform; the steep ramps on few of the accessible buses in Taipei have caused disabled folks to fall out of their chairs; people with disabilities are often denied by the airplane company and local buses. The inaccessibility of the transportation system not only caused harms to people with disabilities, but also to senior citizens, pregnant women and people with young children in strollers. The government has violated Taiwanese citizens' rights in accessing public transportation.
Close to 150 raged activists and allies gathered from all over the country, will join DRAU, a young, cross-disability grassroots organization; together, protesters begin the nonviolent action with wearing black shirt, mouth mask and signage for a silent sitting-in inside Taipei Train Station. The rally takes off to deliver demands to Ministry of Transportation and Communication; the protesters demand an open and direct communication with Minister Mao (毛治國). "We have written complains, and received 'thank you for your feedback' notes from the Ministry of Transportation for years, but nothing has changed!" a frustrated father of disabled sons said.
The government is planning to implement accessibility in transportation systems in the year of 100 (2011) in Taiwan, but most of the implementations have not been designed according to users' need in the past.
